WEEK 5 Scent

THIS WEEK you will pay close attention to your sense of smell on your weekly walk. Scent is probably one of the most overlooked sense in art. Pay close attention to scents in the air and get closer to things to observe their smells. Are there any ways you can try to capture some of the smells in a visual way? In a literal or physical way?

  1. How poetic and meaningful! The composition and coloring on the page is beautifully laid out. I can smell your fragrances and relive your memories.

  3. I agree with Gail and Dawn that a strength of this piece is the sincere, heartfelt gesture of the photograph. The poetic written words tell us how your experience of 'home' has been intensified/impacted by the pandemic and quarantine, which adds another layer to the pristine image. It might be interesting to find a way to suggest that dichotomy -- the comfort of the beautifully arranged flowers and branches vs. the invisible raging of the pernicious virus. (As a tangential though, it strikes me as ironic that one of the symptoms of infection is loss of smell.) I appreciate this idea of how small our personal worlds have become at this time, (in your case, limited to the back yard), and yet simultaneously, more than ever, how our interconnection and dependence on each other for staying safe has assumed global proportions.

    1. I love the ironic connection of smell to connect and loss of smell due to covid. Very interesting parallel. Thank you,.

  4. I love that there is a kind of historic approach to your composition, it feels like a page from a farmer's almanac or a 1940's 'women's magazine' - there's a kind of old-fashioned formality, and the colour selection, symmetry and the way that the reflection reads like a caption below the feature-photo, all convey the sense of nostalgia. Revisiting a place that you have been isolating within, imagining being a visitor to a strange place, even if it's one you already know so intimately, is really interesting to me, it helps to situate me within your mini-composition of natural elements. I'm curious to know what would happen if you distilled the scents in water a la the science link Sally provided? I'm imagining a lovely natural blend.

  5. I really appreciate the strong presence of both the preset & nostalgia in your piece. It is not unlike scent itself — something that exists in an instant, but can transport you so fully into re-experiencing past moments. It's almost as if time itself is another subject in your composition, along with place and the senses. It is lovely, thank you.
